Hi! I’m Kathleen Baldwin, author of the Stranje House novels, your hostess for this leg of the hunt.

I love adventure in books and in real life. Taught rock climbing in the Rockies. Survival camped in the desert. I was stalked by a mountain lion, lost an argument with a rattlesnake, spent way too long in college, fell in love at least a dozen times, and married my very own hero. (That’s him, being so patient with me while we’re navigating the Colorado.) We have four free-spirited adventurous children.

Now that all the technical stuff is out of the way, I’ll introduce the author I am hosting on this hunt.

I am super excited to be hosting David Kudler!

David Kudler

David Kudler is an author, editor, and publisher living just north of San Francisco, California with his wife, teacher/author Maura Vaughn, his author-to-be daughters, and their (apparently) non-literary cats. He is best known as the editor of Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces.

His children’s picture book The Seven Gods of Luck was adapted from a Japanese folktale. Two books that he edited for Joseph Campbell Foundation (Sake & Satori andMyths of Light) explore Japanese mythology and religion. He has written about places other than Japan — but his imagination keeps returning to the Land of the Rising Sun.

Risuko is his first novel.

David graduated from Harvard University, magna cum laude, with an A.B. in English Literature and Language. He received his J.D. at Yale Law School, where he was an editor of the YALE LAW JOURNAL. I published an article in the YALE LAW JOURNAL, entitled, “How Judges Overrule: Speech Act Theory and the Doctrine of Stare Decisis,” and received the Barry S. Kaplan Prize for best paper in Law and Literature.”

Kathleen says: Japanese history is amazing. I can’t wait to read his books. Speaking of his books. David is giving ALL of you a FREE eBook! FREE you guys. How cool is that? The FREE Book is this one—WHITE ROBES.

White Robes

ABOUT WHITE ROBES

One of history’s most amazing armies is born

And its soldiers wear silk robes

Lady Mochizuki Chiyome is mired in grief. Recently widowed by Japan’s endless civil war, she has become tired of mourning, tired of wearing the white robes that are the traditional Japanese garb of grief. On the road, she encounters two young women who open her eyes to a whole new purpose in life — and a new way to end Japan’s century of bloodshed.

This is the first of six Kunoichi Companion Tales, prequel stories to David Kudler’s historical novel Risuko: A Kunoichi Tale

  • White Robes— Mired in her own grief, Lady Mochizuki Chiyome encounters two young women who give her a whole new, much more interesting opportunity
  • Silk & Service— A young Takeda warrior meets a servant who is much more than she seems (coming soon!)
  • Ghost— When Lady Chiyome receives a note from the shōgun, she finds that the messenger is much more intriguing than the message
  • Shining Boy— Plucked off of the streets of the capital, an orphan girl tries to figure out what story she’s wandered into
  • Blade— Toumi doesn’t want anyone messing with her business
  • Little Brother— Returning to the monastery turns out to be as hard as leaving it

Today David is showcasing his NEW novel, RISUKO

Risuko

ABOUT THE BOOK

Samurai, assassins, warlords — and a girl who likes to climb

An artfully crafted novel that evokes a heavy sense of place and enchantment…. Risuko’s development and evolution are fascinating to watch in this powerful and relentless coming-of-age adventure. — Foreword Reviews

Though Japan has been devastated by a century of civil war, Risuko just wants to climb trees. Growing up far from the battlefields and court intrigues, the fatherless girl finds herself pulled into a plot that may reunite Japan — or may destroy it. She is torn from her home and what is left of her family, but finds new friends at a school that may not be what it seems.

Magical but historical, Risuko follows her along the first dangerous steps to discovering who she truly is.
